Earring Therapy is one branch of Auricular Therapy (also known as Auriculotherpy and Ear Acupuncture) that stimulates ear acupressure points by wearing specially designed spring loaded acupressure earring (US patent no. 8,122,739) at the various reflex points in the auricle. It was invented by licensed acupuncturist, Nam W. Jeon, in an effort to find a simple and easy way to apply Ear Reflexology Therapy to complement treating various disorders.
Auricular Therapy is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that the ear is a micro-system of a whole body, meaning the entire body is represented in the ear in a similar manner as hand and foot reflexology. Acupressure points in the auricle of the external ear is utilized to alleviate pain and treat functional disorders.
The Chinese found a close relationship between the ear and body. Auricular diagnostic and therapeutic methods were first documented in Nei Ching written around 200 B.C. Application of auricular therapy has been practiced in China since Jin dynasty (265 - 420 A.D.) French Dr. Paul Nogier discovered the inverted-fetus shape distribution pattern of auricular points in 1950's. In 1982 Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association formulated International Standard of Auricular Points (ISAP) at the request of the World Health Organization.
When disorder exists in the body, the corresponding reflex point in the ear becomes tender. By stimulating this point with acupuncture needle, ear tack, ear pellet, or acupressure earring, complementary therapeutic effect can be achieved to alleviate or to treat certain disorders.
